THE JOY OF AFRICAN COFFEE

Cameroon

Cameroon is located in Central West Africa on the Gulf of Guinea. Blessed with one of the best-endowed primary commodity economies in sub-Saharan Africa, Cameroon still faces many of the serious problems blocking the way of other underdeveloped countries, such as a top-heavy civil service and a generally unfavourable climate for business enterprises. The coastal plains, southern, and central plateau are dominated by tropical forest. To the north are lowlands and semi-arid savanna, and to the west highlands around Mount Cameroon support a range of crops. The vast majority of Cameroonians are farmers. Coffee, cocoa, and cotton are the main cash crops, although sawn wood, crude oil, and logs account for over half of export earnings.

Coffee is the fourth most important export crop involving 1/10 of the population. Coffee output is produced by smallholders located on farms usually smaller than 2 hectares.

Thanks to its location, Cameroon benefits from much rain (an average of over 100 inches per year), and the nutrient enriching effect of the Mount Cameroon volcano. Thus, Cameroon has particularly suitable soil for growing coffee.
