Madagascar lies off the east coast of southern Africa. The world's fourth largest island can generally be described as a high plateau with a coastal strip to the east and a scrubby plain to the west. The climate is tropical with heavy rainfall in the north and east. The majority of the population live on the plateau. Agriculture, including fishing and forestry, is a mainstay of the economy accounting for more than one-fourth of GDP and employing four-fifths of the population. Exports of apparel have boomed in recent years primarily due to duty-free access to the United States. Deforestation and erosion, aggravated by the use of firewood as the primary source of fuel are serious concerns. Exports include coffee, vanilla, cloves, lychees, sugar, and shrimps. The main industries are agriculture processing, textile manufacturing, oil refining and mining (chiefly chromite). Tourism and foreign aid are important.
New initiatives are in progress to produce washed Robusta.
