Landlocked Malawi is located in Central Africa, bordering on Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique. A narrow, hilly country, Malawi begins at the southern end of the Great Rift Valley. 1/5th of the country is covered by lake Malawi, which lies above sea level. The climate is chiefly subtropical, with varying degrees of rainfall. Malawi's economy is predominately agricultural – about 90% of the population live in rural areas – and in 2001, agriculture accounted for nearly 40% of GDP and 88% of export revenues. The economy also depends on substantial inflows of economic assistance from the IMF, the World Bank, and individual donor nations. Tobacco, tea, sugar, and coffee are the main exports. The much smaller manufacturing sector involves mainly chemicals and textiles.
Due to the unpredictable rainfall and frequent drought in recent years, only irrigated coffee is surviving along with the Mzuzu smallholder production in the north. The need to irrigate makes growing coffee uneconomic with low world market prices.
