THE JOY OF AFRICAN COFFEE

Ghana

Formed from the merger of the British colony of the Gold Coast and the Togoland trust territory, in 1957 Ghana became the first country in colonial Africa to gain its independence.

A West African state on the Gulf of Guinea, Ghana is a land of plains and low plateau dominated by savannah. To the west of the country is rainforest, while to the east is the Volta basin. The climate is very tropical, with high rainfall in the south where the majority of the population live. Well endowed with natural resources, Ghana has roughly twice the per capita output of the poorer countries in West Africa. Even so, Ghana remains heavily dependent on international financial and technical assistance. Ghana is a major producer of both cocoa and timber. Bauxite, gold, diamonds, and manganese ore are mined, and a good number of industries exist around Tema.
