THE JOY OF AFRICAN COFFEE

Rwanda

The most densely populated and landlocked state in eastern Africa, Rwanda consists principally of mountainous regions and plateau to the east of the Great Rift Valley. The climate is warm with a summer dry season. 90% of the Rwandan population depends upon subsistence farming. Coffee and tea are the primary exports, while light industry and foreign aid provide other income, but the 1990-93 civil war and ethnic conflict have devastated the country. The economy is recuperating, but the process is slow, leaving much to be done.

However, recent investment in washing stations has paid off, resulting in excellent fully washed Arabicas commanding considerable premiums.
